Before Kat'a can tell about the man she is attracted to Tichon comes to say good-bye: he is about to depart on business for his mother. Kát'a begs him either not to go or to take her with him, he refuses. Then she asks him to make her swear not to speak to any strangers during his absence, he is very puzzled. Kabanicha enters and announces that it is time to leave, she forces Tichon to instruct his wife how to behave while he is gone, Tichon dutifully obeys, repeating Kabanicha's orders that Kát'a must respect Kabanicha like her own mother and always behave appropriately. He takes his leave leaving Kat'a distraught and Kabanicha smugly satisfied.
Nancy Gustafson, Felicity Palmer, Ryland Davies and Louise Winter in the Glyndebourne production conducted by Andrew Davis and directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff.
Does Kabanicha and Varvara sound so lound for real? I thought they were a contralto and a mezzo respectively, not a mezzo and a soprano like here. :| Varvara sounds pretty much as Kata just shorter or smoother, and Kabanicha is very high, still different for the other ladies but not so much.
