The Singer: Master Madan ماسٹر مدن was born on 28 December 1927 in Khanna کھنّہ, a town today in Ludhiana district, then in Jullundur Division of Punjab, British India. He moved to Shimla, India while he was an infant since his father Amar Singh worked there. He initially learned music from his older brother, Master Mohan, who was 14 years older. It is said that his first public appearance was in Dharampur near Shimla when he was less than 4 years old. Following the success of that concert, he started formal training in music. By the age of eight, he was singing at the All India Radio Station Delhi. He and Master Mohan traveled widely in India and were given awards by rulers of different princely states. He would be dressed formally with a turban and coat, with all the medals he had been awarded displayed on his coat. His final public appearance was at the age of 14 in Calcutta (West Bengal, India), where the audience insisted on his singing for hours. Following that he returned to Delhi. He soon became sick. His illness worsened as the time passed. It is said to be very painful. He ultimately passed away on 05 June 1942, a little over 14 years of age. He was cremated along with his medals. Master Mohan, devastated by his brother's death, gave up singing.
His available recordings are: 3 ghazals, 2 Punjabi songs, and 3 bhajans. Most famous are the two Urdu ghazals by Saghar Nizami. These were the only two available records throughout these years since his death until a few years ago, when the remaining records were unearthed by one of his fans. In his rendition, he seems to be in complete control. This is extraordinary for somebody so young.
The Punjabi songs are:
باغاں وِچ پینگاں پئیّاں
(baaghaan vich peengaan paiyyaan)
راوی دے پرلے کنڈھے وے مِترا
(ravi dey parley kandhey ve mitra wasda aey dil daa chor ) (this song)
Most of his songs have been already uploaded on the Youtube. The purpose of this download is just to look at the young singer from another perspective and to pay him respect which he rightfully so deserves.
