This beautiful hymn is also known as "Eternal Father, Strong To Save". The words were written in 1860 and the tune (Melita) in 1861. Melita is an old name for the island of Malta where the apostle Paul was shipwrecked.

The hymn is particularly associated with the Royal Navy, Canadian Navy and the United States Navy.

I'm playing an Ohana TK-35CG.

  • Christopher Hitchens, the late great journalist and atheist writer described this tune being played at his own father's funeral.

Said Hitchens, "its words and music are impossibly stirring even to one who finds the opening words 'Eternal Father' doubly problematic."

  • @lahainatwins An interesting quote. Apparently, a lot of atheists lose their devout atheism when they themselves face death.

  • When I wanted to see if a uke recording of this tune exists, I foolishly didn't think to type in Ken Middleton first. I should have known that 1. Ken would hold a fondness for this piece, and 2. It would sound great--as long as it was not interrupted by helicopters flying by :)

  • @lahainatwins Yes, I love this tune. I included an arrangement in my Hymn Tune eBook. Thanks for watching.

  • For all sailors, those who served and lost their lives, those who serve today, those who served and returned but especially my dad Charlie Donnelly RIP (Royal Navy) as this was HIS Hymn.

  • @SuperPaulDonnelly I am pleased that it has such meaning for you.
