The first child is Pre-operational (Under 7, but older than 2) and the second is a child just out of this phase (The concrete Operational Phase, which is 7-11). This is a replication of Piaget's famous experiment. The reason the child could not tell you that the water was the same isn't because they are stupid, but because they suffer from an Irreversibility(Meaning that they cannot work backwards) and Centration (in other words, they focus on only one part of the problem. In this case, the height of the liquid) mindset.

  • this is a failed experiment. They have not kept the same interviewer and also they both said different things. The second interviewer almost implied the correct answer by stating '...it's got a different shape'.
