BusinessUnemployment Hits 5.7 Percent; Teens Hit HardestUnemployment Hits 5.7 Percent; Teens Hit HardestThe Associated PressThe nation's unemployment rate climbed to a four-year high of 5.7 percent in July as employers cut 51,000 jobs, dashing the hopes of an influx of young people looking for summer work. (Aug. 1)When it comes to holding a job, it hasn't been this bad in four years. And for teenagers, finding a job hasn't been this hard since before many of them were born. Employers cut 51,000 positions in July, bringing the total number of jobs lost this year to 463,000. The nation's unemployment rate now stands at 5.7 percent, up two tenths of a percent from June. The increase in part came as many young people were unable to find summer jobs. The unemployment rate for teenagers jumped to 20.3 percent, the highest since late 1992.More job cuts are expected in coming months. There's growing concern that many people will pull back on their spending later this year when the bracing effect of the tax rebates fades, dealing a dangerous blow to the fragile economy. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)

  • American teenagers will not do most of the jobs that illegals are doing in the US. Slaughtering chickens, and harvesting fruit and vegetables, or cleaning bathrooms just doesn't fit into the American teenager life-style.

I do agree that our country was negligent in monitoring and controlling the illegal immigrant problem. But that was during a phase in our history when the housing market was booming and construction industry required a cheap workforce. So it suited big business.

  • Unemployment doesn't have to be as bad as it is. For teenagers I agree it's hard when normal jobs for them is taken by all of the adults. But adults who are out of work from actual well paying jobs, it is very possible for you to make money online. This I do for a living. I am generally speaking to the audience of carpenters, lawyers, people who can blog about their skills and make money off it. Check out the videos on my channel to learn more on how you can make a living online.

  • some people say that teenagers are lazy well not all of us are...im 18 and ive always struggled to find and secure a job, and no its nothing to do with lifstyle, ive been uninployed for nearly a year and its not fun in the slightest, ive no money , im not getting enough money to save for collage and its that bad that some of my friends are deppressed and some people, even me have had thoughts of suicide i will do anything for a job.

  • seriously the whole point of this article is to point out that kids now won't have money to spend on the worthless crap that kids buy and how that will hurt the economy. kids don't need jobs, if they really want something they can mooch it off a parent or a relative.

  • True but who's to blame for a teenager's life-style? Parents, media, government, etc. They all had a part to play

  • But the people who are making money in the United States--who are the only people who count in the United States--want the added profits of workers who are paid $20 a month.

Nothing is going to change in America, and the road to economic collapse lying before it is firmly in place.

  • say no to other countrys.

  • teens are useless and lazy. thats they have a high unemployment.
