the difference between the japanese and the americans was the cruelty, when we killed japanese after a battle we did it fast, we didn't tie rocks to their ankles and send them to the bottom of the ocean, nor did we bury people alive like the japs did with chinese civilians, they were really cruel, they were truly as ruthless as the nazis

@xxxTruthHurtsxxx I have a book written by Gen. Stilwell. He talks about the difficulty of getting the various Chinese factions to co-operate with each other and with Allied forces. In one case, he comments on being impressed by a superbly equipped and trained Chinese artillery regiment. The next day, before the battle, the regiment was nowhere to be found. When he questioned the Chinese commander, he was told they were withdrawn to because they wanted to keep them safe. Such cases are typical.

@peng1965a The Japanese made many attempts to invade the interior but were defeated. And it doesn't matter what strategies you use to fight as long as you win the war. The chinese armies knew their strengths and weaknesses so they used what they had to fight Japan. It's pointless to argue this, Japan was totally defeated in everything they set out to accomplish. They got their navies and armies wiped out and got their country napalmed and nuked.

@xxxTruthHurtsxxx Japans inability to totally defeat China, was largely due to the fact that the Chinese would fight for a little while and then retreat further into China. China is a huge country, so the main difficulty for the Japanese was one of supply. The longer the supply route, the more trucks, pack animals and men were required to maintain it. China had a terrible road system and bridges often incapable of heavy loads. Plus, there was little in the interior of China that Japan wanted.

This episode does not really reflect the truth that the US navy in fact suffered a major defeat at the battle of Savo Island. If the Japanese navy commander were not over-cautious, it would have wiped out the rest of the US transportation fleet as well. The US fleet command seemed to be not as competent as the Japanese counterpart. But US learned quick from this defeat and its industrial power eventually overwhelmed the Japanese.

@stephentsang2000 I can just imagine what would happen if you ruled the Navy back then, with no choice of peace, you would've surrendered or lost first, unlike the skills of the generals aboard the carriers and making tough decision

@xxxTruthHurtsxxx i didnt say I think that but that was what the Japanese were thinking back those days !they did get some fighters, mainly the AVG, and some US planes fighting from China... Well what was left for them to do ? without any oil traded from the USA and all its accounts frozen they HAD to do something...which was unfortunately to attack the USA.

if america sets a full scale war like WW2 they kick ass for sure even the defeat at vietnam and iraq the suckers don't fight like soldier but a coward!

@IIIJG52 The Chinese only received 5% of the total Allied budget, basically only rifles and artillery. China didn't have tanks or fighter planes, against Japan's full arsenal. It was Chinese manpower and spirit that kept the Japanese at bay. Weapons wise, Japan totally outclassed China, but were never able to defeat China. They made initial gains but it became a stalemate after about 2 years. And even though Japan didn't want war with the USA, they still decided to attack anyways. Stupid mistake

You obviously don't understand American resolve, the US would have NEVER sued for peace with Japan. We were ready to wipe every Japanese off the face of the Earth. Remember we were ready and willing to continue nuking the island over and over again. We had already incinerated 67 Japanese cities before the A-Bombs.

Americans depend so much on luck when fighting battles. No wonder they lost the war to the astute Chinese in Korea and Vietnam when luck runs out.

@stephentsang2000 Normandy was not luck. Midway was not luck. Leyte was not luck. My point is, these battles and campaigns are clear demonstrations that luck had little or nothing to do with the American victories. In each battle, the Americans faced odds that jeopardized their chances in such a way that luck would play a trivial role in their success. Did Deep Blue beat Kasparov by luck? No, Kasparov was defeated by wit and skill. The Americans possessed wit and skill and that's how we won.

is the longer the ship better, i know the can hyold more guns and crew, but the shorter ships can menover faster and are smaller targets to hit

Well touching up on what every one else said, I believe it depends on the objective of the craft. Like dokaw said, if the mission requires retrieval of craft or a "hit and run" focus (strike then flee) destroyers and/or light cruisers fit perfectly. However if the objective requires long durations of time in enemy territory or greater firepower, carriers/ battleships come into play.
