I think I read somewhere that Ghostwriter was a former slave, and one of Jamal's ancestors. That is why he was in Jamal's basement.

Let me put y'all on to ghostwriter all I know is that spirit is from the 1920's or so. I use to watch this as a kid, matter of fact it takes place in Fort Greene. My place of birth and where I was raised. My classmates and I used to try and solve some cases and see who solves it first.
