My grandfather smoked and died at the age of 55. I never even knew him because he died of lung cancer before I was born.
There will always be exceptions to things like smoking and lung-cancer, and people who don't die from it, but is it really worth the risk?

The essential questions that are NEVER asked by ANY politician, in ANY public service announcement, are:
How do you want to die?
How long do you want to live?
Since we all die, isn't quality of life (which includes its length) the only thing that matters?

You got a good point - quality of life matters. The problem is most people don't sit down and think "smoking will improve my quality of life", and then compare that to the health risks. But if they did, and they decided it wasn't worth it, smoking is a pretty hard thing to stop doing.
