"VICTORIA -- In the last 48 hours a number of people in Sooke have reported feeling powerful tremors that some believe are an earthquake.

"I heard what sounded like a freight train coming, that rumble, and it was very brief. My bed actually shifted," one Sooke homeowner told CTV News.

Seismologists say there are no indications of an earthquake in the Sooke area and all calling the recent reports a mystery.

On Wednesday several employees downtown felt similar shaking but believed it was a result of blasting at a downtown construction site.

Alison Bird with the Pacific Geo Science Centre says, "It would have to be an extremely large explosion for people in Sooke to feel the Victoria blast".

The District of Sooke, the Sooke Fire Department, and the RCMP were all contacted but were unable to shed any light on the rumblings. The Department of National Defense also denied have any part in the tremors.

South of the border the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station says they didn't have any aircrafts operating Tuesday because of high winds."

  • the most logical answer is.. ask your self.. what does it mean when all ground is not shaking. and only some is.. local area abrupt movement underground.. something big was tunnelling near these people.. smart eh.. yah that has to be the real answer if their ever was one

  • anyone else putting two and two together and noticing sounds all over the world like machines tunneling and see the connection? no? fucken victoria.. ahaha

  • Underground boring machines, the government is taking action, because when the food shortages during late march happen, they want to be far away. Good luck guys.

  • I live on the coast more inland but it is weird here sometimes bam we get a rumbling and swaying then a crack and the big one was suppose happen already /

  • There are other places in the world this is happening. Constant rumbling shaking.. but NOT picked up by seismic equipment ... I think it was in Vermont somewhere.

  • @CosmicDramaQueen Power of suggestions...that's my channel... not these noises. LOL

  • good old blasting theory..

  • Earthquake? Question mark?

  • This just happened to me early this morning at 4:24 AM hear the New Madrid Fault Area. Two spurts of shakings of 30 second tremors..

  • @shavas100 I've been hearing "the Hum" here east of Pittsburgh for at least 10 years. House near top of hill. I can drive 5 miles away and it's not present. Louder in basement too. Summer months has periods of quiet. No active mines underground--only old ones, some flooded. No trains running close either. No large power sources since is mainly woods/farm fields/housing plans.
