From waterfowl to wild turkey, Missouri offers a variety of year-round hunting opportunities. The excitement and pleasure of hunting comes with the seasons -- from pulling on the camouflage of the spring turkey woods, to climbing into a deer stand. Hunting is basic to who we are and a great way to learn more about wildlife and nature around us.
Hunters are immersed in nature, learning and understanding all about the game. The sign or clues wildlife leave behind, active times of day and game trails within a hunting area are all part of being effective hunters.
Take time to scout, plan and anticipate your hunt. If hunting is a new experience for you, then ask to tag along with someone who knows the ways of the woods. If you plan to hunt with a firearm, then a hunter education class is required before you buy a permit and the class can help you learn about safety, hunting ethics, seasons and limits and how to choose the right firearm for the game you wish to hunt. Ask for the most recent information on seasons and limits before going afield.
Visit one of the Conservation Department's shooting ranges to practice shooting skills and advance your hunting ability so you can make effective shots for a clean kill. Plan for a successful hunt and be ready to clean and transport the game.
Preparing for the hunt helps you hone your skills for a successful and rewarding season.
