White Police officer found Guilty of killing Blackman

JohanA former transit police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man at an Oakland train station was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Thursday, capping a racially charged case that raised fears in the Bay Area of possible violence after the verdict.

Prosecutors accused the ex-officer of intentionally firing his handgun as he tried to handcuff Oscar J. Grant III on New Year's Day 2009. Johannes Mehserle, 28, tearfully testified that the shooting was a tragic accident caused when he mistakenly grabbed his firearm instead of an electric Taser weapon during a struggle with Grant.

The shooting was captured on video by several witnesses. Mehserle, who is white, fired a single round into the back of Grant, who was black and was lying face-down on the station platform. Mehserle resigned a week after the shooting.

as a black female, i've come to the point of being embarrassed of my race. I am college educated, and I feel as if I'm the "minority" in my own race. The black males (and many of the females) in these major cities have been slacking for a long time and blaming others for their shortcomings. We only get reports of them hanging in the streets causing trouble. I'm getting tired of it.

@The Jay christopher 5 You should watch the movie Antwone Fisher. Ever visited an Indian Reservation? If you are educated then you MUST have seen the Doll Tests used in Brown vs Board? What will cure people in general is knowing Oneself and the environment that molded them. Lead by example instead of being defeated. If you are exceptional then lift your people. I have trained weak people and made them Fearless. If you do nothing Evil prevails.

@nandansho I know you posted this response over a year ago but, very well said. I'm tired of people (black, white etc..) that claim to be educated but fail to have any knowledge of the history of america.

Of course you have your own boot-straps to pull yourself up by! What do you suppose you do about the commercial media shaping public opinion by their broadcasts? I'm not even black and I see it! EVERY TIME there is a black or minority professional ie, doctor, lawyer etc they are held to the strictest scrutiny! Always something bad to say about them. ALWAYS! Follow the media, you'll see what they are trying to instill in the public's opinion. Think about what they are feeding you! Open your eyes.

@nandansho: this is not the case to do anything. This brother was no angel (i'm not saying he deserved to die). I'm tired of these ghetto people getting into all kinds of trouble, then wanting the black community to get behind them. I'm over it. If you want to fight evil, there are many better cases out here to get behind.

Poorly trained, under funded police department made some huge mistakes and costs a man his life. I don't know if the punishment fits the horrific crime that was committed, but atleast the family will gel millions from the lawsuit.
