The instructors at my firearms class stressed a physical check of the chamber because depending on lighting conditions a shadow could be cast and make it hard to see in the chamber, so I do check with my finger very quickly, especially in low light conditions.

Since your talking gun safety, keep your fingers OUT of the action. If the slide closes, it's going to smash the hell out of it. Visual inspection IS enough.
