A 1973 film starring Jack Nicholson, directed by Hal Ashby (Shampoo). Also featuring Otis Young and a very young Randy Quaid. Very, very funny with an undertone of seriousness that catches up to the main characters by the end of the film. Nicholson is fantastic, as usual, but it's one of his smaller films that was immediately overshadowed by "Chinatown" and "Cuckoo's Nest" that followed in the next two years, respectively. At the time of the film's release, it was a huge success and Nicholson's performance was regarded highly. Columbia then pulled the film from release, rereleasing it closer to Oscar time, but any buzz that had been generated had worn off by that time. Still, Nicholson was nominated as was Robert Towne, the great screenwriter, and Randy Quaid for Best Supporting Actor. Based on the novel by Darryl Ponicsan. Highly recommended.

  • Nope. People actually left the goddamn house and lived in the world.

  • Nicolson is brilliant in this role that should have gained more attention than it did. Great support from Otis Young as the fellow lifer and a youthful Randy Quaid as the unfortunate Lawrence.

  • @toyznstuff R.P.M. & Glover on Shore Patrol. What a team!

  • I love this movie. I love Jack Nicholson.

  • Still great

  • Another great film from Hal Ashby - one of his best, I think. Thanks for posting!

  • The Navy I remember as a new seaman. The Music added so much. I'm retired now, after 30 years service... just not the same. Sailors really looked after another then.

  • One of Nicholson's best movies & sadly not that well known ( over here! ). What the fuck happened great American movies? The last 10/20 years has seen a really bad decline in standard to the gutter level we're at now. Witless, boring 'OMG' trash for the slut generation is now considered 'Art'. Men acting like fags & women acting like complete whores is all you see in movies now. No real stories or escapism. Silly 3D Cgi SHIT. Movies are DEAD!

  • This is a great American movie from the 70's. Nicholson and his supporting actor, Randy Quaid, should have won Oscars,.

  • @DeeDonner Jack played this role so well, you just knew that he was in the real Navy and not acting. I should know I was a member. The only reason Jack didn't win the Oscar that year, the academe doesn't know a damn thing about the United States Navy or the whole armed forces for that matter!
