Testing of a small wind turbine with PVC blades and a home made alternator. The blades are cut from 3" PVC and are 1ft long plus 4 inches to mount it to the hub. The alternator uses 12 magnets and 9 coils, 3 coils on each phase.

  • which sound was placed on your video?

  • Are you asking about the music or song? I use Pinnacle Studio 8 for editing my videos and the song was something that came with the software.

  • One solid piece blade would be good. I noticed the narrow spots are where the blades broke. I love the stator. the rotor would deliver 4 times the power with a steel backing to channel the magnetic flux. Sorry if i missed anything the speakers are out on this puter. This is definitely 5 stars.

The tail was the best use of an old advertisement political sign ever.

Who complained about the wind turbine the most?, the DEMs or the REPs

    MUDDy

  • Thanks Mud. The blade did get improved in a later video. The magnets are backed by steel, but there isn't a second layer of magnets behind the coils and that hurts the power.

  • You can get some high stresses with a small diameter turbine because the rpms have to be very high to get a good tip speed compared to the wind speed. And centrifugal acceleration goes up with the square of the rpm.

  • I came to the same conclusion. My next one will be at least twice as big. I will also make sure I keep it under load.

  • @Zypkin TRUE THREU AND TRUE. AND SOLAR FILLS THE GAPS IN THE WIND VERY WELL. WIND OR SOLAR ARE ONLY PART TIME GIGS.

    MUDDy

  • @muddymuddymuddmann ...I think U just got to the point :)

5 days of wind at 35mph with a 1.5kW generator make up for a 365days of production with Ur small scale 9mph generator... plus you have much less working hours this longer lifetime. And that's all... you have to use the wind when and where there is wind... otherwise you go solar :)

Or course one has to find a compromise, but I believe it's worth to keep in mind that higher power comes with higher winds.

  • @Zypkin ACTUALLY I THINK INDUSTRY DOESNT CARE ABOUT THE INEFFICIENCIES AS COMPARED TO THE COST OF THE EXTRA MAGNETS. AND THE LOW WIND STARTUP AND LOW RPMs OF THE AXIAL FLUX'S ABILITY.

IF THEY DID, THEY WOULDNT MAKE A SMALL 4 FOOT PROP AND RATE IT AT 1.5 KW. IT TAKES ABOUT 35 MPH WINDS TO GET THERE. WE DONT HAVE MANY DAYS OF THAT PER YEAR. WHEN THE WIND SPEED IS CUT IN HALF THE POWER OUT IS CUT BY 8 TIMES. 9 MPH IS 1/64th THE POWER. 23 WATTS. AND IT COST THE CONSUMER HOW MUCH?

  • @muddymuddymuddmann ...I invite you to do a few tests and see the difference between an iron core and a dual rotor air core :)

...dont U think that if axial flux air core is so effective we'd be producing energy that way instead bothering with tons of iron in our MW generators?

  • @Zypkin Hey friend,

It is a common statement. The difference of the dual magnet rotor axial flux PMA is. There are 2 magnet rotors that are of opposite poles. So the magnetic flux travels from the back of one magnet to the one next to it. This makes each magnet 2 x stronger in flux current. The other rotor does the same thing but in opposite polarity. thus the flux is directed through the coils instead of to the magnet beside it. That is why they need no ferrous metal in the coils. full circle.

  • @muddymuddymuddmann ...this is a common statement but it's totally wrong!

No iron in the machine means a lot less field in the coils (100-1000 times less!!!) which means that to get the same voltage you have to use a lot of copper (turns in coils), therefore the impedance (resistance) of Ur machine will be much higher and the internal losses will be huge compared to those of the same machine with iron cores.......

    ...think abt it :)

  • @Zypkin ...actually like this I'm really surprised that it works at all!

By using a counterplate you'd be able to increase the magnetic fiels inside the coils by a big deal... probably more than 50%... which means you could reduce by the same amount the number of turns in each coil and consequantly the overal resistance of the generator (read cut the losses by a lot)...

...more on this on reuqest :)

  • hey... you should use an iron counterplate on Ur generator... if U really use one disk as U show in the video U have an open magnetic circuit... not much efficiency :(
