Last April I was required to update Quicken 2005 Deluxe to Quicken 2008 because of Inuit's sunset policy. I felt that I gained nothing from this forced upgrade other than gain functionality that Intuit killed. I have it on good authority other software vendors are considering planned obsolescence as well.
I respectfully disagree. Quicken is an valuable software product, low priced and intended for mass consumption. Older quicken products are "sunset" because the file format for data storage was never intended for handling large amounts of data . Intuit discovered this. Rather than have users continue to use a product that could breakdown they sunset. But the upgrade costs only $99 or less. But if you want a custom accounting software product, it will cost $50k or so.

Wow, I was not aware this sort of thing was even going on anywhere in the software industry. Thank you for the heads up!
