The Rankin House (from their brochure)
A U.S. National Historic Landmark, the Rankin House was an important stop on the Underground Railroad in Ohio, through which many slaves escaped from the South to freedom. Slaves climbed the steep stairway from the Ohio River to John Rankin's home. Today, visitors can scale the restored stairway and see Rankin memorabilia in the home.
John Rankin was a Presbyterian minister and educator who devoted much of his life to the anti-slavery movement. In 1826 he published his anti-slavery book, Letters on American Slavery. In 1834 he founded the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society in Zanesville. From 1822 to 1863, Rankin and his family, along with their Brown County neighbors, sheltered over 2,000 escaping slaves.

The National Underground Railroad FREEDOM CENTER
is a museum on the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, based on the Underground Railroad's history. The Center also pays tribute to all efforts to "abolish human enslavement and secure freedom for all people."

His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, will accept the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's International Freedom Conductor Award on October 20th, 2010. In the finest tradition of those abolitionists who fought for eradication of slavery in the past, this award goes to individuals and organizations that have been highly effective champions of freedom.

  • It’s kind of cool to know that Rev. John Rankin, a direct descendant of the abolitionist of this video, is today following in the footsteps of his ancestor as he stands and fights for God’s Truth. For anyone interested, his youtube videos can be found by searching on teinetwork or on Rev. John Rankin.

  • @LizBizToo LOL you remember about the piano!! I was going to mention that haha! I have uploaded a return video (Not really an explanation) but it's called "Feathering Heights" ;) To be honest, had some family "things" ... I was promoted at work but became overworked and now I have moved right across the country! I had videos half finished and I really wanted to come back but time was against me, my friend. I now have the time to slow down and so here I am! :)

  • Wow - having read Uncle Tom's Cabin, I still had no idea about the Rankins. What great information - thank you. I'll read up on them a bit more.
