Please view in full screen mode. This animation (created by Robert von Heeren with Redshift 7 SP1 Premium, Maris Technologies) shows the path of the half shadow (penumbra) of the upcoming partial solar eclipse on January 4 2011 between 6:40 UT and 11:00 UT from space's view at Earth. The path moves mainly over the sea. The maximum of this solar eclipse is around 64.7N / 20.8E. It is the 151th saros cycle. Timestep of the animation is 15 seconds. Date&Time is shown in the upper left corner in German. The back-steps in longitude and latitude against Earth rotation are necessary to follow the eclipse's path. because this eclipse is only partial no core shadow occurs, it would be a darker much smaller spot in the middle of the eclipse and the half shadow, compare to my other eclipse animations in this channel for e.g. the total solar eclipse in 2009. This is the first solar eclipse in 2011. The next one is on June 1. But in 2011 there will be no total solar eclipses, only totallunar eclipses.
