@tubagee He was in his early 40s so yes that is most likely his own gray hair. There was no need to add any in for a simple screen shot. Those tests were done to allow others to see how he smiles, responds to questions... and turning his head to show off his profile for the camera.
Actually, they were more likely coloring over his hair during the show's 3 year run, with black shoe-polish...errr, I mean Hollywood's secret 'age-controlling' technique. ;)

@SoundJudgment This screen test footage is available on the DVD called,..'Lost In Space Forever', a documentary on the series, on Region 1, unfortunately now deleted I think. As you say, well preserved footage and I'm glad I own it now in my Irwin Allen collection.
