it works with any broom, you can do it any time any day but its working best lately beacuse the planets are lining up and the gravitational pull is greater.

I think it has more to do with the cut of the straw in the broom. The broom was brand new and would stand with no balancing needed. Now that we have used it for awhile, it will still work but it takes some time to get it to do it.
