This is one of my first fusion splices, captured with the "jonb head-cam (tm)". I'll try to make a better one next time.

  • otas32: the fibers you describe are very different than those I was dealing with in the video. I imagine you can buy ends for the stuff though: perhaps a pre-polished end which you don't have to "fuse" to your fiber but might instead have a kind of light transmitting gel that makes the connection with the jagged edge. I know the automotive industry uses some fiber like this but I forget what it is called. Also obviously used for lighting effects etc.

  • You may be able to get a better less jagged end by scoring the fiber circumferentially (you likely don't need to ring the fiber just scratch one side) then pull the end off. With "my" type of fiber the glass breaks fairly cleanly in this manner.You can buy a sapphire scribe to do the scratching: but a glass cutting tool might do the trick (carbide I think) since the scale of fiber is so much bigger. Good luck, what type of flash modifier are you making?

  • @malerror 288 fosc-400 D5 with 288 cable, 144 cable, 96 cable, and with 7 cables of 24 fibers (not all splicing) with two fsm-60s and two men team in less than 12 hours :)

  • The fibers I'm using are a lot thicker than the ones in this video and have no coating (for light, not data).

    I've seen smooth solid fused jewel like ends for these hose type cables. I suspect light transmits a LOT better with those tail ends. I want to do that, splice with precision and fuse them. I have no idea how to do it, I'm not technically savvy (artist, not engineer), and I have no tools (specially precision tools).

    Can you recommend anything or point me in the right direction for info?

    I got my hands on a short length of two different thickness of optical fiber (for lighting purposes), with several thick threads in each hose like cable (the thickness is given by more or less threads in the hose).

    It was given to me cut with scissors, obviously, the fiber have broken irregular ends, and now that I'm trying to use them for an experiment I'm doing of trying to transmit the light from a camera flash ot the other end I lose a lot of light.
