On December 16, 2011 police opened fire on striking oil workers in the Western Kazakhstan city of Zhanaozen, killing 12 people and wounding dozens of others.

Massive oil reserves were recently discovered in the nearby Caspian Sea, raising concerns that Kazakhstan's legacy of resource wealth at the expense of democracy won't end any time soon.
