Is Jurgen Klinsmann right? Does the USMNT have no identity? No style? Jason, Greg, Simon and Jaime debate.

  • the rest of the world is trembling at the thought of the US being great at soccer

  • Gahh, I hate people who call defensive play anti-football, because it makes no sense. If you know you can win by defending, why not defend?

And the US does have a lot of different nationalities and styles, but I think the USMNT's style is to wear out the other teams and piss them off until they make a mistake. Look at the Spain match, their style went to shit there.

What Klinnsmann said is bullshit, and agree with Simon wholeheartedly on this one.

  • USA's style is hard work

  • Style matters. Especially to the identification of the people with the game and therefore to its popularity.

And the most succesful teams in the world do have a style.

  • @ObiWonGinobili Mmm... Klinsmann is not forgetting that. He is making a reference to that they still haven't found their style, which is indeed a reference to the fact that the game hasn't been played for long.

  • Lets look at how long soccer has been around in other countries vs the U.S:

    England: Manchester United (founded 1878)

    Italy: Serie A (founded 1898)

    France: Ligue 1 (founded 1932)

    Spain: La Liga (founded 1929)

    Germany: Bundesliga (founded 1963)

    U.S: MLS (founded 1993)

Apparently Klinsman forgot that German soccer has had a minimum 30 year head start on the U.S! And in the case of Italy, a 95 year head start!!!! Wow Klinsmann, apparently American Microwave Mentality has gotten into you.

  • The style of play matters for teams who want it to and think that it matters. The U.S. soccer "style" is still in it's infancy. Soccer wasn't even considered a sport by many young athletes and people until WC 1994. So of course we don't have a style yet, the USMNT has only really been in existence for 16 years. When you compare a team like England to the U.S. it's like comparing the experience of a 10 or 20 year seasoned veteran to a rookie. It takes TIME to develop a style of play.

  • @DBrownofdc Hardly.

  • @DBrownofdc Uh. No.

  • @ DBrownofdc friend, the world can not play football in USA

  • European-style = physical and tactical game

South American style = creative play and imaginative, talented players

African style: extremely strong physical game

    USA style?

  • Love it! Now we just need nicknames for these guys.
