***Check out my other video "Casting and Cast Handstands Supplemental Drill" for a drill that didn't make it into this video***

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkD4lB58a38

This video presents a few casting drills (in addition to the tried and true method of repetitive spotting) that, in my opinion, can help develop a straddle cast to handstand. These are some drills that I feel help the girl get the idea of pushing down and leaning over the bar, which many athletes either have a fear of doing or aren't strong enough to do, and end up setting their handstand short of vertical. Nothing in this video is "perfect," but this athlete is very talented and is still learning and working on this skill. I welcome your criticisms of my ideas or approach to teaching this skill, but I will delete any comments that I feel are negative and directed at the athlete herself.

And as always, I do not own the rights to this music, but am very thankful if the owner will allow me to continue using it to get some depth to the quality of the video.

  • The best and easier to achieve technique (of legs together hstand) is the casting up through the arching back, especially for a taller gymnast. How it works: moving shoulders forward, casting legs as fast as possible, arching as a bridge (a learning stage only), pulling up to the hstand. Pros: fast to learn, easier to execute, less conditioning. When it is perfected, then the arch is skipped, or masked. Useful for errors correction: if shoulders forward too much, or not enough power of cast.

  • What causes kids who are strong and flexible to bend their knees getting into the straddle postion, but then remain with straight legs when they reach the straddle postion? Is technique the issue?

  • 3/4 of it is flexibility. =(

  • gymnastic post-rock...winning combination

  • im weird with learning skills like i tried learning this this way and i tried putting feet on the bar straddling up but i kept falling over beofre i was in handstand so i just tried doing it casting up and got it on the first day with no help i got my kip in 3 days

  • Great video got to try some of theese drills to get my cast handstand

  • @GymMonkeyAz i got mine in one day with no help without straddling

  • @superduperhappyvids it depends on the gymnast. for most (including me) its easier to straddle.

  • is it harder to straddle up or go up with out straddling

  • Great Great Video thank you so much for sharing!
