Thats the basic idea, the laser burns off a tiny layer of the surface. However, if the settings of the laser arn't set correctly then you can seriously fuck up your laptop, I've seen someone's laptop screen become warped before because the laser was too powerful...

I'm not too sure, I've read in places that it does, yet one of the apple store employees assured me that it doesn't.
I'd ask an apple employee if your thinking about engraving your laptop, make a note of their name, etc. Or you could wait for your warranty to expire, as long as the surface of the lid is clean and without any dents, there should be no problem.
