Scarpia is searching for Angelotti, and he has figured out that Cavaradossi was helping him escape. Tosca has come to the church to find Cavaradossi, but found Scarpia instead, who uses her jealousy to help him with getting information to catch Angelotti. In the aria Scarpia looks forward to seeing Angelotti hanged and Tosca in his arms. He is consumed with lust for Tosca—she has made him forget God!
