  • Where can i learn this mukinawara in France plizz

  • @magomedleloup

Learning to use the Makiwara by itself is only a small part of the picture. If you are training in a good club under a good instructor then that's where you learn how to use the Makiwara. You can find additional information regarding the history, types of Makiwara, how to make a Makiwara yourself as well as the purpose of using the Makiwara in good books like "Karate-Do Kyohan, The Master Text by Gichin Funakoshi",, "The Best Karate series by M.Nakayama", etc!

  • Hi, thanks for posting the video, please could you tell me the purpose of practicing makiwara? Is it simply to strengthen the strike area of the fist or to practice close strikes?.

    Thanks for your time.

Practice with the Makiwara is the soul of Karate....

It's value lies not only in strengthening the parts of body used in attacking and blocking but in learning to concentrate the power of the whole body in the fist at the moment of impact. It is also an effective way to learn distancing...." (M. Nakayama).

MOST of the Karate Waza can be used on the Makiwara with little imagination. In this video I am using a 2 level Makiwara which was my own idea and as far as I know I am the first to put Jodan and Chudan target on the same Makiwara. This allows me to do a 2 level combination from the same spot. Don't forget it is also a great idea to use a kick bag as well as the Makiwara! I use the same Makiwara for palm strikes, Shuto Uchi(knife-hand). vertical punch, hook, and roundhouse punch

You're most welcome, I hope the info was adequate. Please feel free to ask if there is something else. I MIGHT know the answer!

  • Very nice! a fine testament of "makiwara is the keystone to strong weapons" (Funakoshi)

  • "It is NOT merely for developing the knuckles". Well said. This kind of punching training also develops wrists resistance on the impact, among other things.

    All the best to you.
