  • How long does it take for the smoke to clear? What I mean is; can the next train pass through the previous train's smoke? Is there a vent shaft?

  • @Nigel16032009 - The tunnel has (I believe) 3 vent shafts. The time taken for the smoke to clear is dependant on how much smoke the engine was making and on wind speed and direction. Most days the smoke will be gone in under five minutes but on others it will take longer. The trains can travel through the smoke without problems.

    Regards, Matt

  • @MLawrence2008 - Had a look on Google Earth and found one. Next time I visit the Bluebell Rly I'll film smoke rising from it. It'll be just like the good old days of steam.

The only other time I've witnessed this was when Tangmere past through Bramhope tunnel three years ago. There's a vent near the Airport and it 'smoked' quite nicely
