Two and a half years of BJJ and I finally got my first cauliflower ear. So I got a friend to drain it for me...scientist style. This is not the recommended approach to this problem.

  • was there one specific time before it happened like the day before or so that you were like, "I feel like/ think I got cauliflower ear" or was this just a surprise that you realized you had it as a result of BJJ over time?

  • @LidarDan15 It came on pretty quick. In hindsight, I was doing an under the leg pressure pass a lot around this time, using my head (and consequentially ear) to keep pressure on my opponents' leg. It would be a bit tender after class a lot and then "pow" it pretty much just blew up in one class (a day or so before this). The good news is, I adjusted how I execute that pass and I havent' had anymore problems.

    Hope that answers your question.

  • @TheloniusJ Hi. Since posting your video on your cauliflower ear a few years ago, have you experienced cauliflower ear again since the initial draining? Or has it never happened again? Are you still practicing BJJ? I'm thinking about taking up some form of MMA or boxing soon to supplement my gym workouts and this is something that might concern me. I found some ear guards online so I hope that will help me. Glad you posted your vid. Keep up the bjj.

  • @vidform Yes, I am still doing BJJ and no it hasn't come back (though my ear has gotten inflamed up a couple of times). Like I said to another question, I think it came on because of a specific pass I was doing and am now able to avoid it with slight adjustments.

If getting cauliflower is an issue for you the ear guards are definitely a good idea for grappling and regular boxing head gear for striking. Good luck.
