Obama dismisses Carter's charges of racism

US President Barack Obama has distanced himself from ex-president Jimmy Carter's claim that racism was fuelling protests against the administration's key healthcare reforms. His spokesman said that criticisms were not based on his skin colour.

President Carter got the peace prize too. You know Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize twelve days after taking office. Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy". . They also gave the peace prize to Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO, the best known terrorist organization on the globe. This is like giving it to David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.

I applaud Obama for speaking out about the over use of the race card. I think he needs to do more however. There is without doubt, a racist element in the oppostion but it is on the fringe. The continuous application of the racist lable to all opposition harms those who have legitimate policy disputes. Moreover, like the boy who cried wolf, its constant use somehow denegrates the impact of the lable. Decorum and honesty dictate the legitimacy of any debate.
