I'm rebuilding my 1974 Honda XL 175. I just finished installing the crank and transmission. This is what it looks like while in motion. The gears slide back and forth on those two shafts, to give you your five gears.

  • im rebuilding my engine and the bike wont shift gears when the other half of the crankcase is off but shifted when was together, is this normal ?

  • @JAMESYFUS Sounds fairly normal to me, without both halves of the case to hold the gears perfectly in line, things can sometimes jam up and not turn by hand. If it works when the engine is together, then you're golden!

  • hey so i just comletly rebuild my yz80 top to bottom and everything perfectly fitted like a cock in a sock, i ran through the gears multiple times and it was working untill i put it back in the frame and dropped it into first, now every gear locks up and nutural goes to what i asume is first or second, is there an easy fix or do i have to rip it all apart again? cheers

  • @aelli5 You're not gonna like to hear this, but it sounds like it needs to come apart again. When it locks up like that, it could be from one of the shift forks not being in its proper place on the gear, or, if you had the gears removed from their splined shaft, maybe one or two are in the wrong order or possibly backwards.

Very strange that it would run through the gears fine outside of the bike, but fail when it's installed in the bike. Wish I could be of more help!

hey thanks heeps for the help, got some advise from a local moto shop and they said could possibly be clutch releted but unfortanatly no go so ripped engine out again and start al over except im gunna get someone to be there that know what there doing when the case goes together, thanks agaon for the help, much appreciated

  • @aelli5 No problem man, best of luck. While you got her apart, pay careful attention to the way the gears are facing on the shaft, they can only go on one way, especially the ones that lock into each other on the shaft. Also pay close attention to any of the slip bushings that go between the gears and the shaft's surface, those can only fit one way as well. If you don't already have one, find a diagram online. CMSNL.com has all the microfiches for tons of different bikes.
