Suntzux, There was a time when the whole first page were these portal pages. I haven't seen one come up in Google's SERPs for years.
OddManArmy, from my understanding they were creating thousands of these doorway pages and redirecting visitors using java to other pages. This was very popular among other sites that used doorways as well.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but these tactics still work and are very effective. But yeah don't start doing it, less competition the better.

BMW actually got in trouble for showing different content to browsers than it was showing to the search engine bots, not making tons of landing pages like that.
