he's playing alt. roots here. common ones, too (C/G, F/A, and then that funky em with a Cnat in it). it's not "wrong." as for his playing style, his chord progression is entirely original. so teach your students what you like, but the role of a teacher is to get the student going in a musical direction, not solely to impart arbitrary rules.
the sound is lo-fi production. and lo-fi is a misleading title; mastering takes care of vol. imperfection. a simple sound, sure, but an honest one.

The sound is cheap, playing not even engaging and the only original thing in this song is his voice, that comes to knock you off when it start. It could easily be a fake a good song. Actually... that’s what it is. Thanx for not insulting me... i’m an honest guitar teacher, I would teach my students over and over again not to strum the wrong bass all the time like him....
