Grab your knife & fork and come with us on a culinary tour of Southern Africa.
What a journey it will be a feast for the taste buds and a delight for the eyes.
Southern Africa Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia & South Africa - is a land that not only has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, but mountains, deserts, forests, rivers and lakes, so of course the cuisine reflects a rich diversity.
We will sample all the ingredients of this remarkable land - the familiar, the
surprising, the every-day and sometimes the unexpected.
Top South African chef Roy Isham The Peoples Chef will be our guide as we
venture into this intriguing land. Hell be visiting busy markets, meeting local cooks and showing us how to re-create some of their dishes. Hell go fishing with local fishermen, visit indigenous villages to see how they prepare and cook their traditional meals, visit farms, vineyards, go on safari and give us the low down on some of Southern Africas top restaurants and attractions.
As we learn about the food, we hope also to learn about the people and their way of life. Southern Africa, so full of history, is poised to become even a bigger tourist attraction not least when South Africa hosts the 2010 World Cup - and what better way to gain an understanding of a nation than through its food?
We envisage that this series will weave together several aspects of Southern
African life with food and cooking as the central theme. Clearly, such a large land mass offers a huge range of food and cooking methods. The colourful and imaginative dishes are sure to whet the appetite and encourage people to try their hand at cooking.
We want to go further: to reach into the soul of the cuisine to uncover the essence of Southern Africa. Looking at the way people live and cook, learning about their customs and meeting them to share this most fundamental of pleasures, we believe, is the pathway to greater understanding.
On a more immediate level, the 2010 World Cup is bound to foster a huge amount of interest in all things South African. We believe this series would be well placed to feed that interest (forgive the pun) not just a cookery programme, but also an insight into a way of life. With Roy as our guide, it will make compelling, informative and entertaining viewing.
Chef/Presenter Roy Isham has been a Chef for 15 years. Starting as a dishwasher in Holland before moving up to chef.
He then worked in many eateries in France, England and Scotland, before moving to South Africa.
He was personal Chef to President Nelson Mandela in the mid nineties.
Chef Roy worked in some of the top restaurants, including the world famous Londolozi Game Reserve and Cape to Cuba restaurant in Cape Town.
