Bela Lugosi was, is and always will be Dracula. The role can not be played better. He became Dracula and personified the character for all time.

The actor who impersonates count Dracula, in order to be convincing and leave an impact on the spectaror, has to be three things: scary, timeless, aristocratic. Bela Lugosi managed to be all three, in a masterful balance. Jack Palance was more scary but lacked the gentleman's touch or the aristocratic features, he was too rugged. A certain timelessness has to be conveyed by the actor, so that he looks and sounds and behaves as a man from a vague past time, but without being corny or laughable.
