Quick addition of liquid TOPSe to a solution of Cd-ODPA in TOPO (heated to 325 C) initiates CdSe nanocrystal formation and nucleation. You can watch the solution color change as the particles grow bigger!

  • Cadmium selenide is an important n-type semiconductor. CdSe is also being developed for use in opto-electronic devices, laser diodes, nanosensing, and biomedical imaging. They are also used being tested for use in high-efficiency solar cells.

  • excellent video! I want to have a go at this myself; got all the glass and PTFE syringes. now I just need my sigma account (which may be trickier than the reaction :) Is that purple blob to the top right of the condenser and behind it a syringe pump? I'm after one of those too. Can large enough CdSe dots span the IR band, or is there something more suited to that? I'm scheming on producing colour references for spectroscopy.
