In the UK we associate electric fences with preventing cattle from straying, but in South Africa, with its high crime rate, you'll see electric fences round almost 50% of private properties.

At this year's IFSEC security exhibition at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, UK, the leading South African electric fencing company Nemtek displayed their products and explained why they thought they might catch on in other countries too.

The first argument is visibility. Would-be intruders who might try and circumvent a burglar alarm will think twice about tackling a perimeter fence that could give them a painful high-voltage electric shock.

Another factor that's particularly relevant if you have a large property, and parts of the perimeter fence are out of public view, is that if someone tries to break through, anywhere on the circuit, an alarm will ring. So not only does the intruder get a shock but the householder knows he's there.

The electric shock is unpleasant but not life-threatening. Nemtek's products are safety-tested and subject to rigorous regulations.
