If run properly, the can be of benefit but in reality, they are too open to exploitation of desperate graduates, college leavers etc. They also reinforce the class divide as only those who can afford to work unpaid do so. When I graduated, I did 2 unpaid internships supporting myself with evening work. I ended up doing the work of a normal employee and more whilst they were sitting around talking about their flats, cars, gym memberships, nights out etc. I also had to argue for paltry expenses.
