This is one of the "Sept Danses Grecques", composed by Mikis Theodorakis, and choreographed by Maurice Béjart....
The dancer in the first part is Michel Gascard.
He was trained by his mother, Colette Milner, at the La Rochelle Conservatory in France. In 1973 at the age of 16, he won first prize at the 'Prix de Lausanne' international competition. He then went to the Mudra School in Brussels, directed by Maurice Béjart, where he studied for one year before joining the 'Ballet du XXième siècle' (Ballet of the 20th Century) company. He danced his first solo roles when he was 17 years old.
Maurice Béjart created a role for him in the "Seven Greek Dances".......
Mikis Theodorakis dedicated the "Seven Greek Dances" to Maurice Béjart in 1980.

  • Amazing ballet ... but this is not Greek dance!

  • @drummerhellas The ballet is a unique creation from Maurice Béjart, who choreographed the Seven Greek Dances, on the music the Greek Mikis Theodorakis composed. Béjart was not trying to copy any Greek dance, he created a sublime unique ballet, and no, a ballet is not a traditional dance. Traditional dances are from special regions of countries, their people, and are born out of the music of the people, playing on their own unique fantastic beautiful sounding folk instruments.

  • The Greek Dances were choreographed by Maurice Bejart for Michel Gascard, who danced them incredibly beatifullly in Japan, late 80's. Have not seen the better version since.

  • @fishmaster9399 Thank you for your information, I added it, also what I could find on internet because of the name Michel Gascard!

  • Very nice!

  • That is great, thank you! I first saw Mr.Gascard's Greek Dances on a random DVD from Japan, given to me by a friend of mine, and fell in love - Mr.Gascard doing both parts of the Dances. I did a research, and came up with the information I gave you. Since then I tried to to look for Mr.Gascard's name - there was nothing else, except the Leningrad. And you can see Mr.Bejart watching - that is priceless. I was just wondering what happened to this beautiful dancer>>

  • i love this music and choreography. wonderful dancing also. the open-air "venue" is perfect for this piece.

  • magic!!!!!!!
