I believe this is real since after all real cloaking when using energy shield technology functions by having a manufactured magnetic field similar to what a planet with an atmosphere has, essentially you create a field around you which would prevent particles (aka weaponry) from penetrating the field, keeping your ship intact, as for the cloaking it's most easily utilized using the shield technology as a medium to refract the light around the item in question creating (essentially) invisibility
