On a gray day with freezing fog, I drove to Pratt, Ks to try and catch a crew change or two. I really enjoy watching a train with several engines start from a stop and throttle up. It was after 3:00pm before a train finally pulled up to the dispatcher's office and traded crews.

I've included a few historic shots that I got from Pratt County's excellent museum of the early railroad days. Pratt was founded in 1884 and the Rock Island arrived in 1887. It's a great town and I'd enjoy living there.

  • Driving southwest on US 54 next Wednesday, hope to chase some UP action. Nice work.

  • @jimsonIL I'm sure you will, it's a busy line!

  • very nice, how many aday run this line.

  • @bnsf7512 thanks, on an average day there are probably 10-15 trains per day. Weekends might see 25 or so. It's a busy line.

  • Hey Ken, I figured it might look familiar to you. I'll be you'd never seen the old depot and hotel pictures though huh? The depot there was a lot like the one in Dalhart.

    Thanks for the comment.
