Sean Connery interpreta il Generale di Divisione Robert Elliot "Roy" Urquhart, comandante della 1a Divisione Paracadutisti britannica durante l'operazione "Market Garden", ossia l'invasione dell'Olanda, attuata per conquistare i ponti sul Reno e aprire le via di accesso al cuore della Germania. A causa di una serie di sfortunate coincidenze, oltre che per gli errori del Comando alleato, l'operazione per la quale Urquhart è stato principalmente ricordato si rivelò un fallimento. Robert Elliot "Roy" Urquhart, Commander of 1st British Airborne Division during Operation "Market Garden", Dutch invasion, carried out to gain the bridges on Rhine to open Germany's core access. Although the operation for which Urquhart is principally remembered was a failure, his conduct during the battle (indeed, in all his battles, both in World War II and in Malaya), his imperturbability and his bravery are unquestioned.

@YARROWS All this soldiers, for days, hungry, thirsty, fighting on the ends of their amazing energy reservoirs, all in a situation of "do not know" when back up is comin, hard german fire, enclosing in the oosterbeek perimeter, they were all heroes and generals, they were standing, fighting, defending, i have big respect for all those guys..... it wa snot about the commanders in field, the whole situation in and around Arnhem was sober....

The British Army could have done with more commanders like General Urquhart.Clever Brave Respected and he mixed it with the Germans aswell,killing one in a battle on the streets of Arnham.
