Abbot R. Laptook, MD is the medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Women & Infants Hospital. He oversees all clinical activities within the NICU and is currently involved with the reassessment of the optimal manner to train pediatric providers in stabilization of high-risk neonates in the delivery room. He also provides guidance and support for all quality management initiatives ongoing in the NICU. Dr. Laptook has been involved in studies to understand the pathogenesis of brain injury following hypoxia-ischemia. Specifically, he has examined the role of substrate availability, extensive brain acidosis, and temperature of the brain in newborn animal models. Since 1998, he has transitioned to clinical research and has been involved in the NICHD Neonatal Research Network. He served as the principal investigator at the UT Southwestern site and subsequently moved to Women & Infants Hospital in 2004 and is now the principal investigator at the Brown site.
