The newest issue of Guitar Player says that Torn's Clouds About Mercury "turned the rock world on it's collective ear" and was "hyper-influential". Ha! I doubt that anybody outside of the avante-garde fusion circles ever heard of this. Certainly nothing like influencing the collective rock world. I actually kind of like this kind of stuff sometimes. I guess I just woke up with a low tolerance for BS this morning.
@Silverspring777 by the way, that groove changes at around 3:40 . . .there's a part where it goes into a simpler 4/4 7/8 alternation for example, plus a couple odd bars (I think it was a couple bars of 6/8) getting to that section, etc., but then it goes back to the earlier groove, and so on. If you understand how to count the basic sections, the few odd bars here and there should be easier to figure out. I could write it all out for you, but I don't really have the time.
@Silverspring777 As a drummer, the way I'd count is 4/4, 7/8, 7/4. Those three bars keep repeating. Another way to look at it, to help you understand the structure of it compositionally, is with the bottom numbers being all 8s, and bring it down to just two bars: 15/8 and 14/8 (that's the same thing as 4/4, 7/8, 7/4). Basically, the phrase has one extra eighth note in the first bar, which is what makes it difficult to "feel" if you do not have a lot of experience with odd times (I do).
@kondo337 Which line up do you prefer.. the one with Bill or without?

The Trumpet sounds like a Robert Fripp guitar opening from the early eighties.

The phrase could be counted as 2 measures of 4/8 and one measure of 6/8, or as two bars of syncopated 7/8.
