Next time I meet someone I suspect of being a New Zealander I'll ask him to say fish and chips.
If he says fush end chups I will slaughter him.

They were not killed because they couldn't pronounce the name. If you read the entire chapter, you will see that this happened because they did not help in battle.

Why was the whole shibboleth sibboleth thing necessary? The Ephraimite dialect renders them incapable of making the "SH" sound, and would say "S".

I agree with the others. Mispronouncing "shibboleth" was not the reason for the killing, but the fact that this mispronunciation identifies the enemy Ephraimites. Presumably the Ephraimites spoke the same language but had a different accent.

Like, say, Norwegians and Swedes. Their languages are very similar, but a little different, especially in the accent. If Norwegians and Swedes ever went to war and wanted to kill each other, maybe the accent would indicate spies?

To be fair, in context the test for them to pronounce Shibboleth was to see whether or not they were Ephraimites, presumably because Ephraimites tended to not be able to pronounce it correctly. So they weren't killed simply because of the mispronunciation, but because they were perceived to be Ephraimites.

Not that that makes it much better, of course, since it's still a matter of warmongering. But the pronunciation wasn't the main issue, it was only a test tee see if they were the enemy.

About Luke 19:27 :

I hate to play the Christian Advocat,
but I think Jesus is telling a storry about a crual king, not commanding.

Try to read it from Luke 19:11 .

What I find ironic is that people who say I don't understand the bible, havn't even really read the thing, and if they did, they used magic "faith glasses", or THEY claim that some parts can't be understood. I read the bible and studied it's historical context, and I have to say compared to the other religions, the hebrew God is most evil creature ever thought up by mandkind. he makes Darth Vader look like a sweetheart.
