This is my home made tornado machine with a new fan installed! It's a 12cm ball bearing fan that produces a rather nice 102cfm of airflow.. I now have it producing a twisting vortex that even has fog rotating around the outside of it!!! For some reason the mist took around a minute to become fully functional.. I think the stupid ants got into the water supply at the bottom again so it took a while to clear them out.
Fan is no good... Too small and high speed. You need a larger fan that will move more volume of air at slow speed. Use an induction motor and a dimmer switch to control speed. Shaded pole motors don't work on a dimmer. For something that size, use a 20 inch box fan. They have induction motors. Good luck....

Surely this would work better with an acrylic tube?

WHERE DO YOU GET THE MATERIALS?!

I have 2 in my case with a fan controller and with the controller they aren't as load. I highly recommend them if you have heat problems with your pc. These things are raw power!

With the machine I made about 1 in 15 tornados are multiple vortex.

The extra mist rotating outside the funnel itself, looks to be the outer core of the tornado's rotation zone, kinda like the outer edge of a strong tornado, but not necessarily a wedge.
Have you had any multiple vortex tornadoes with this machine yet? :)
