Reading some of these comments makes me wonder how can people be so ignorant and close-minded. I like anime and cartoon style. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. Anime is a great style but hardly anyone wants to break away from that style. The biggest advantage of cartoons are the exaggeration of emotion. But at the same there's instances where this style is a bit lacking.

@d0peleaf - Well, yes, it is a style. The problem is that it tends to be fairly homogenized. Though I'm no fan of Akira Toriyama (Dragonball Z), he did have his own very distinctive style that many people recognize. There are many artists out there who do. However, it's impossible to tell the difference between the majority of anime artists on the Internet because no one takes any artistic risks. They just follow the template and don't deviate from it.

He's a REAL cartoonist, he doesn't draw that stupid anime shite.
Western cartoons ftw!

Anime can be well-animated. My problem with it is that the artists tend to use very similar styles. That's also my complaint about artists who mimic the style - you've got to add something new if you want your art to appeal to people. Don't count on anime-style art to get you into art school, for instance. Originality is key, and both western and eastern illustrations can be done well or poorly.
