  • @bulletstastegreat: You're right. State pensions for old people is not a libertarian policy. It is purely a transitional measure that recognises the context of the current welfare system. Likewise the continuation of some invalids benefits and 3 more years of DPB.

The welfare system has created a number of people who are completely dependant on it. Those people will have annuities bought with the proceeds of asset sales and no new beneficiaries will be admitted to the system.

  • This budget has some flaws in it...

Beofre FDR introduced old age pensions in USA in the 30's more than 1 in 3 eldery people died in poverty, now that number is almost zero..

The sale of NZ assets in the 80's for the introduction of a flat tax and GMFI with the then back out from Lange has effectively evermore spoiled your chance of getting NZers to agree with that policy, why should you be returning only the schools and hospitals sale profits, we paid for the all the commons did we not..?

  • I cannot see the value in upgrading our defense force, when we have never had any serious threat to our borders. Internal law and order should receive any proposed upgrade, seeing as this is an area that could be unstable post-"revolution". Radical change itself could breed radicals.

I agree that national defense is a legitimate role of government. But legitImate doesn't have to mean expensive, or even important.

So, why the immediate need for frigates?

  • Pensions for old people?? Please, thats not libertarian. They had their whole productive life to take care of that. While building the NZ defense forces up could be a good idea. 3% of gdp dosen't buy many $125million dollars raptors or billion dollar submarines. NZ population is too small, better to spend the money on bribing Aussies to keep them friendly.
