Yes, wrestling and muay thai. When I fight boxing, I do stay angled off on the outside, but in the pocket, I square up, but then I side step off very quickly to get out of danger. If you are square, your head has to be moving, and you can't hang out after you throw your combo. Thanks to all of you who have pointed this out.

  • for a boxer you stand very square, did you get that from another fighting style

  • can you do a video on slipping/bobbing and weaving for kick boxing?

  • man awsome now how will i get punched ! with these techniques ..if only it were that easy

  • good movement!

  • @cypresscoach Yup, meat heads abound, brother!

My gym is in Stamford, CT. Montalvo's Boxing Association.

  • @albertpope There are always a few who can't or won't learn. Most gyms have an "enforcer" to help them settle down. I appreciate the simplicity of your video. I've seen a lot of videos that get way too involved for most people to understand. Thanks. Where is your gym?

  • @cypresscoach I hear you loud and clear on that challenge. I always start the newcomers with with tons of plyometrics to take some spring off their step before they get in the ring, and then start them with the first round only lead hand jabs, second round only lead hand hooks, then next round only right hands (or everything). Seems to help them understand that they don't need to hurt you to defend themselves, which is usually the source of misunderstanding.

  • @albertpope Yes, I'm a certified amateur boxing coach, and also a pro boxing coach. We take safety seriously in my gym. The only time I spar is when we have a new kid, who's bigger than the other young guys. It takes them a while to learn how to lighten up their punches on smaller sparring partners.

  • @cypresscoach You and your partners are using (newer) 16 oz. gloves? You are using headgear? You are putting vaseline or alboline on your face? You are using a top quality mouth guard like the shock doctor?

  • @cypresscoach excellent point.

  • @lukatme2 Hey, I'm 56 and I just started sparring again. I don't remember it hurting this much.
