Disclaimer;; I am in NO way a teacher of ASL. ASL is my first language, my parents are both Deaf. I graduated from an Interpreting Training Program and am a working sign language interpreter. I am NOT a teacher, i am just showing a few friends how to teach ASL to their babies. For a complete teaching for your children i recommend checking out SmarthandsCA!

Oh, and another thing. I dont want any misconceptions when i said -knock on wood- for me not having kids. i think my friends are AMAZING mothers who i am so beyond proud of them!! & there is this running joke that i am the next one on the list to have a kid. That is probably true, but i'm in denial! My fiance and i would of course embrace a child if it ever happened earlier than planned. That is all i meant by that! (=

Interpretation Below;

hey guys i know i haven't done a video in so long, I've just been Blehh, LIFE! Um anyways, one of my friends had asked me if i would record some signs for her to teach her daughter & i think its a GREAT idea because so many of my friends are having kids & everybody but me.. -knock on wood for THAT! - but all of my friends are having kids & i think its great to just learn a couple of signs because they can pick this up before they learn how to speak. So i think its great!! So here we go!

Um i've never taught anybody sign language before so if 'im going to fast or if i'm not making sense just let me know & i will gladly take a break from my super exciting life ( SARCASM) & rerecord this video. =) ok? Alright..

I've got a little list here; HELLO & GOODBYE. -wave- that can be used for both hello and goodbye. or you can say bye like this too. It doesn't really matter.

PLEASE & THANK YOU - your hand is like this, fingers closed and you have to touch your body. this is please. &then use the same handshape and you say thank you, actually touch your chin.

MOM & DAD.. here is mom. (hit your chin twice) .. and Dad... Grandma, Grandpa.

AUNT&UNCLE- aunt starts with A, so you can remember to make an A, don't need to touch face. Uncle starts with U, uncle is here by your temple. Uncle

MILK- milk, again do this twice.

DRINK- to drink, act like you are grabbing cup and drink!

FOOD- touch your mouth, do it twice. for EAT, do it on side of mouth pretend actually putting food in. actually eating food.

SHOES- like this.

You'll notice that i'm telling you to do these things twice. Nouns you will notice if you pick up more ASL, signs are signed twice. Verbs are signed once. So i'll show you right here.

Clothes, noun, is signed twice. Thumbs actually touch your chest. Ok? To get dressed, verb, sign once. Clothes, then get dressed.

So, whats another example? Chair.. sign twice because it is a noun. To sit down, that is once. You'll learn more as you go along.

Dirty diaper! so use these, i call them pinchers. index and thumb. put down. put them right here. there. and do it twice. after you do that twice you can say dirty. or dirty like this. whichever one. Stinky or dirty. YOU HAVE TO DO THE FACE!!

change diaper do these fingers.. and sign NEW. hands are closed & flat like this.. and then do same with other hand but cup a little. Knuckles touch the palm of your.. uh.. hand! i have problems with nouns..

Night-night.. different ways to do this.. 'Sleep' go to sleep and close eyes. Or sign for bed.. lay head on pillow. If you want to sign BED, you would do this except twice. bed.. or go to bed. or go to sleep. doesn't matter.

Blanket.. hands like this.. like an oval shape. Putting a blanket on, and this doesn't matter but here is what im doing. Blanket.

So yeah ASL is cool because it takes on the role of what you're doing.. Like drink. as if you have an actual cup.

Bye bye,.. like i said before.

Outside, my hand is not in a complete circle like this. goes from here, to oval shape outward. Outside. Ok..

All done.. or if you wanna say finish, ask if your child is finished with Cheerios, idk what kids eat haha.. say Finish, and eyebrows must go up! , do it twice. i know i did it like 4 times, YOU only do it twice.

All done.. eyebrows up again. except only sign once for all done and twice for finish.

ALL GONE- If you're wanting to ask a question.. like ' is something all gone' your eyebrows are up. Oh you cant see that -moves camera- all gone. Here are a ton of cheerios, now you don't have any - all gone. If you are not asking a question, your eyebrows stay the same. Gone!

Ok? &that's all i got for you! if there are some that you want to know that i didn't do, or some you want me to do again because i'm a horrible teacher, just let me know & i'll rerecord them for you!

Hope you guys enjoyed! All done! =)

  • You did a great job explaining "how to"....even explaining the difference between how nouns and verbs are signed, and about facial expressions. You should do more of these videos!! Keep up the good work! :)
