We visited two Hutongs in Beijing. One near Shishahai and the other Nan Luo Gu Xiang. This offers a glimpse into the disappearing neighborhoods in Beijing, but maybe China as a whole. They are narrow streets, and traditional buildings. At the entrances to these places, you will be approached by Rickshaw Vendors offering varied tours. Would have been great if we had the time. Make some time to have a beer at the Pass by Cafe. Not only is it cosy and quaint, but they have a clean western toilet upstairs!

  • Yes I was in several areas including Chongqing, Shandong and yes Beijing. My first visit was to the Fujian Province in 1993. In that area, the entire area was like one big Hutong. It felt like I was intruding while visiting. Can you imagine if they suddenly made an area of New Orlean's Ninth Ward a tourist attraction so you can see what life is/was like? I think I'd be angy. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Come back in the future, there will be more videos for sure.

  • Thanks, I lived in Beijing for a while, brings me back!

  • Great video. Did you recently go to Beijing? I was there in March 2005 and I went on the Hutong tour. I remember the alleys and roads were so narrow in some places but it was amazing to see how people live. Very cool. Thanks for posting. 5/5.
